Consider the following statements about the Black hole:
1. It is a region of space from which nothing, not even light, can escape.
2. There is a region of space beyond the black hole called the event horizon.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
1 only
2 only
Both 1 and 2
Neither 1 nor 2
A black hole is a region of space from which nothing, not even light, can escape. Despite the name, they are not empty but instead consist of a huge amount of matter packed densely into a small area, giving it an immense gravitational pull. There is a region of space beyond the black hole called the event horizon. This is a 'point of no return' beyond which it is impossible to escape the gravitational effects of the black hole. Hence both statements are correct.
The first image of the black hole inside galaxy Messier 87 was published on April 10, 2019. The black hole was given the name Powehi, meaning "embellished dark source of unending creation" in Hawaiian. The image shows an intensely bright 'ring of fire' surrounding a perfectly circular dark hole.
