A tornado is a violent, whirling windstorm that moves in funnel fashion, with the broad end of the funnel scraping dark clouds in the sky and the narrow end, touching the earth.
The wind speeds are tremendous, usually about 177 kilometres per hour but sometimes touching 480 kilometres per hour or more. The violently rotating winds blow down almost everything in their path, and a powerful updraft of air inside the funnel can suck up large objects and carry them long distances.
Tornadoes can happen practically anywhere in the world but they occur mostly in the United States.
Though tornadoes that occur on the Western Seaboard are typically weak, more powerful and damaging tornadoes, such as the tornado that occurred on 22 May 2008 in Perris, California, can also occur. More tornadoes occur in Texas than in any other US state.
