The Stockholm convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POP) was adopted at a Conference of Plenipotentiaries on 22 May 2001 in Stockholm, Sweden. POPs are organic chemical substances, that is, they are carbon based, which remain intact for exceptionally long period of time and become widely distributed and are toxic to both human and wildlife.
Ramsar convention on Wetlands, is an intergovernmental treaty that provides the framework for national action and international cooperation for the conservation and wise utilization of wetlands and their resources. Hence it is not based on Hazardous materials.
The Basel Convention on the control of Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Waste and their Disposal was adopted on 22 March 1989 by the Conference of Plenipotentiaries in Basel Switzerland, in response to a public outcry following the discovery, in 1980s, in Africa and other parts of the developing world of deposits of toxic wastes imported from abroad.
