In In-vitro Fertilization (IVF) the zygote is allowed to develop for about a week and then it is placed in the mother’s uterus. Complete development takes place in the uterus and the baby is born like any other baby. Babies born through this technique are called test-tube babies. This term is actually misleading because babies cannot grow in test tubes.
IVF is highly used technique for Commercial gestational surrogacy (CGS). The new Surrogacy (Regulation) Bill, approved by the Lok Sabha , it includes contracting a ‘close relative’ as a surrogate by a heterosexual married couple who have been childless for five years of their marriage. This line, in gist, separates altruism from the commercial tinge that surrogacy carries with it.
