Which of the following statements is/are true about Indian secularism?
1. Indian state maintains in principle distance vis-a-vis all religions.
2. Indian state follows policy of 'non- interference' along with policy of intervention at same time based on western concept of secularism.
3. Government spaces do not display or promote any one religion.
Select the correct answer using the codes below.
1 and 3
2 only
2 and 3 only
All of the above
India doesn't have state religion. It doesn't promote any religion as state religion. State thus maintains equal distance from all religions. State usually doesn't interfere with religions and gives them freedom to manage their own affairs. But constitution does permit intervention in financial, economical, political or other secular aspects of a religion. Thus Indian state follows policy of 'non-interference' along with policy of intervention at same time. Unlike the strict separation between religion and the State in American secularism, in Indian secularism the State can intervene in religious affairs as per the provisions of the Indian constitution.
