The POCSO Act has come into force with effect from 14 November 2012. It is a gender-neutral Act which has been enacted to strengthen the legal provisions for the protection of children from sexual abuse and exploitation. The Act defines a child as any person below 18 years of age and describes different forms of sexual abuse, including penetrative and non-penetrative assault, as well as sexual harassment and pornography.
