Which of the following physical phenomena is/are responsible for the formation of 'Mirage' in deserts?
1. Total Internal Reflection
2. Refraction
3. Dispersion
Select the correct answer using the code given below.
1 only
1 and 2 only
2 and 3 only
1, 2 and 3
• The phenomena of mirage uses both refraction and total internal reflection
• When the incident angle becomes larger, the refracted light will get closer and closer to the interface between the air and the glass. When it is larger than the critical angle, the light will only be reflected but not refracted. This phenomenon is called total internal reflection.
• Mirage happens when the ground is very hot and the air is cool. The hot ground warms a layer of air just above the ground. When the light moves through the cold air and into the layer of hot air it is refracted (bent).
