At the hour of midnight on 14-15 August 1947, India attained independence. This was not going to be easy. India was born in very difficult circumstances. Perhaps no other country by then was born in a situation more difficult than that of India in 1947. Freedom came with the partition of the country. The year 1947 was a year of unprecedented violence and trauma of displacement. On 14-15 August 1947, not one but two nation states came into existence – India and Pakistan.

Partition caused a tremendous damage to psychological and economic condition of people. The problems were difficult for both regions as discussed and refugees settled over all parts of country. The government had to stretch itself to the maximum to give relief to and resettle and rehabilitate the nearly six million refugees from Pakistan who had lost their all there and whose world had been turned upside down. The task took some time but it was accomplished.
