The Bru tribe is one of the scheduled tribe of Mizoram which has been recognized by the Government of India as “Riang” tribe. Living amidst dense forest, they practice slash & burn or shifting cultivation. The large-scale violence in 1997 led thousands of Bru tribals to fled Mizoram and took shelter in Tripura. Between 1991 and 2001, the population of Bru (Reang) tribals in Tripura had increased by nearly half (47%).
