Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, an integrated steel plant under the corporate entity of Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL), is the first shore based integrated Steel Plant in the country, constructed with the then latest state of the art technology.

Durgapur Steel Plant, in West Bengal, was set up in collaboration with the government of the United Kingdom and started production in 1962. This plant lies in Raniganj and Jharia coal belt and gets iron ore from Noamundi.

The first public sector fertilizer plant was established at Sindri, Bihar. The second plant was constructed at Nangal in Punjab. To run this plant smoothly, Nangal Fertilizer and Chemical Limited was formed in 1956. A third plant of this kind was set up at Trombay.
