  • Scientists from around the world met at the General Conference on Weights and Measures in Versailles, France, and voted to change the definition of a kilogram, tying it to a universal constant in nature. The change will go into effect on May 20, 2019.
  • The previous definition of kilogram was based on the mass of the international prototype ‘kilogram’ which is an artefact, platinum iridium cylinder stored in a locked vault in the bowels of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) in Sevres, France. However, the new definition is based on physical constants of nature. The change is in the definition of kilogram and will not have any practical implications.
  • The National Physical Laboratory, India (NPLI) is the custodian of National Prototype of the Kilogram, copy No. 57 (NPK-57), which was provided by the BIPM in 1958 after its first calibration in 1955. The NPK-57 has been recalibrated in 1985, 1992, 2002 & 2012 so far at the BIPM.
