International Criminal Court (ICC) was set up after the ad hoc tribunals to deal with Rwanda war crimes proved ineffective. International Court of Justice - ICJ is the primary judicial branch of United Nations and settles legal disputes and provides advisory opinions submitted to it by its member states. Hence, statement 1 is not correct. The ICC began functioning on 1 July 2002, the date that the Rome Statute entered into force. The Rome Statute is a multilateral treaty which serves as the ICC's foundational and governing document. States which become party to the Rome Statute, for example by ratifying it, become member states of the ICC. Hence, statement 2 is correct. ICC, a criminal court is based on the principle of complementarity. ICC was not created to supplant the authority of national courts. It ensures that those who commit serious human rights violations are held accountable. India is not a member of ICC. Hence, statement 3 is not correct. .
