Explanation:

Although the general direction of flow of the Peninsular rivers is from west to east, a careful study reveals at least three main directions of flow:
1. The Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna, Cauvery and several smaller rivers drains south-east into the Bay of Bengal.
2. The Narmada and the Tapi flows west and even several other small streams originating from the Western Ghats flow westwards into the Arabian Sea.
3. Tributaries of Ganaga and Yamuna such as Chambal, Betwa, Ken, Son and Damodar flow in the north-easterly direction.
