Cabinet approves re-promulgation of triple talaq ordinance: Union Cabinet has approved a proposal to re-promulgate the ordinance making instant triple talaq a criminal offence. The ordinance makes all declarations of instant triple talaq void and illegal and the practice a punishable offence with imprisonment of three years.
Citizenship Amendment Bill : The Bill seeks to provide Indian citizenship to non-Muslims from Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Pakistan. The bill was first introduced in Parliament in 2016 and was examined by the Joint Parliamentary Committee. Under the Act, one of the requirements for citizenship by naturalisation is that the applicant must have resided in India during the last 12 months, and for 11 of the previous 14 years. The Bill relaxes this 11 year requirement to six years for persons belonging to the same six religions and three countries. The Bill provides that the registration of Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders may be cancelled if they violate any law.
Capacity Building programme for elected Woman representatives of PRIs: The Government of India has initiated the Capacity Building Programme for Elected Women Representatives (EWRs) of Panchayati Raj Institutions. Objective of the Capacity Building Programme – to empower EWRs by developing leadership capacities so that they serve as catalysts for social change and function as peer facilitators in the field, become vocal for their rights and participate effectively in the governance processes.It is a significant endeavour in creating a forum for EWRs to understand their roles and responsibilities in a more prolific manner.The project is being implemented by National Institute of Public Cooperation and Child Development (NIPCCD), an autonomous body functioning under the aegis of the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India.
