Rammohan’s mind was set at a synthesis of the best in the East and the west in the Indian setting .He is truly remembered as the modernizer of India because his multifarious activities – his efforts towards social and religious reforms ,his zeal for the spread of western system of education ,his advocacy of civil rights ,liberty of press ,support for constitutional movements in the world – all played a part in promoting in India a liberal ,cosmopolitan and modern outlook .
Work for social reforms
In the field of social reform ,Rammohan Roy can be justly called the morning star of social reformation in India .His great objective was to get a better trearment for women in the society .The efforts he made for the abolition of the barbarous and inhuman custom of Sati are too well known .he was far in advance of his contemporaries when he defended women’s rights of remarriage and pleaded for change in the law of inheritance of property in favour of women .Roy advocated prohibition of polygamous marriages and child marriages .Above all , he well realized that women could not hope to get a status of social equality with men unless they received opportunities for education ,hence Roy became a strong supporter of women education. Rammohan Roy launched a frontal attack on another evil of Hindu society—casteism. He realized that the caste system had reduced the social organism to a purely biological function and impeded growth of unity and solidarity among the Indian people .he wrote , “The distinction of castes ,introducing innumerable divisions and subdivisions among them(Hindus),has entirely deprived them of patriotic feeling....... . Roy Suggested the adoption of saiva form of marriage to remove all discriminations of caste and race.
Attitude towards religion
Rammohan’s attitude towards religion and religious matters was utilitarian. He believed that every religion has truth in it that’s why He judged different religions not so much from the point of view of the ‘basic truth’in them but from their social usefulness. His emphasis was on the ethico – religious thought common to all religions of the world .That is why he emphasised the unity underlying all religions .His practical mind found expression in the foundation of the Bahmo Samaj. The aim of Brahmo Samaj was something to which all religions could subscribe ,namely the The worship and adoration of the eternal .He fought against against orthodox Hindus and fanatic Christian missionaries . He always wanted to to renovate Hinduism.Roy’s advocacy of religious Universalism is of greater relevance even today as a social and political counterpart of political secularism.
Attitude towards education
In the matters of development and spread of education ,Roy emphasis was on the the Growth of English in India .Here Roy’s view was that liberal education of the western type Alone could help remove ‘the darkness of ignorance’ and help in the progress of society ; Further he believed that English education alone could enable Indians to take part in the administration of The country and public activities for the benefit of the people.for the spread of English Education he collaborated with David Hare and set up Hindu college at Calcutta in 1817. in 1822 Roy founded Anglo –Hindu school ,later turned as Vedanta college. Another great contribution of Raja’s to modern education was his emphasis on the study modern Indian Languages .He himself gave the lead in this direction by writing books in Bengali on Grammar ,Geography ,Asronomyand Geometry. He also published Newspapers and magazine like ‘Sambad Kaumudi’ and ‘Mirat-Ul-Akbar’ to spread the rational thinking in society.
political ideas of Roy
As far as his political ideas are concerned He never demanded Independence for India ,Roy accepted British rule as fait accompli. He admired British rule not for colonization but for the development of modern liberal ideas ,which he firmly believed that it Would work as a regenerative force for the advancement of India. Roy did not ask for Responsible government ,but did demand wide – ranging administrative reforms like a Better judicial system ,separation of judiciary from executive ,wider share for the Indians in the services and above all ,liberty of press. Roy’s passionate love for freedom had cosmopolitan sympathies and he made no secret of His views ,in 1821 the Roy celebrated in Calcutta the establishment of a constitutional Government in Spain.Brajendranath has correctly pointed out that Rammohan pointed the Way to the solution of the larger problem of international culture and civilization in human History and became a precursor .... a prophet of coming Humanity.”so we can say that Roy Considered himself as a global citizen .
Ideas for Economic reforms
Even Roy came from Zamidar backround ,he fought for the rights of poor tenants exploited By Zamidars. He continuously fought against the fixed revenue for the cultivators in Bengal and opposed heavy export duties imposed on Indian goods. He criticized East India Company’s salt monopoly. He championed the idea of free trade, he was of the opinion that the entry of foreign capital ,abolition of restrictions over European settlers and land revenue reforms to help the the process of building more wealth and prosperity in India. He was of the opinion that every individual is free to advance his happiness and interest. He was an ardent supporter of individual property he believed that it was a holy duty of the government to guarantee the right to property of people.Unlike contemporaries British thinkers he favoured land ownership to be vested in the hands of Individual instead of the state.
Conclusion
From the above discussions we can say that Rajaram Mohan Roy ,was not only a social ,political, religious ,economical reformer but also a great educational thinker .His Contribution particularly in the field of education is very praiseworthy and notable.Roy Came with his scientific temper ,broad outlook ,championship of freedom ,liberal and fundamental reforms and harbinger of equality and freedom .now he is no more in the world but his ideas ,views and works are the precursor of modern era .Both Roy and Brahmo Samaj played a significant role in the making of Modern India .Rabindranath Tagore called Him ‘Bharat Pathic’ ,as well as Bipin Chandra pal commented that priceless value of Raja’s Efforts was his struggle against medievalism ,for he is recognized and honoured as ‘The Father of Indian Renaissance’.
