Consider the following statements with reference to podzols (soil):
1. It is commonly found in the boreal biome.
2. Soil is characterized by high levels of phosphates and it is good for agriculture.
3. Soil has a pH between 3.5-4.5 due to the excessive leaching of alkaline matter.
Which of the statements given above are correct?
1 and 2 only
2 and 3 only
1 and 3 only
1, 2 and 3
Podzolization is a type of severe leaching that results in the eluviation of iron and aluminium sesquioxides. The process is more common in locations where precipitation exceeds evapo-transpiration. The minerals are extracted using a process called leaching. When organic material is broken down, nutrients are released, but organic acids are also produced. Chelating agents are what these organic acids are. Many podzol soils grow beneath coniferous woods because the evergreen nature of pine trees generates a very thin litter layer that inhibits humus synthesis.
Podzol soil is commonly found in the boreal biome, which is a region of high latitude characterized by coniferous forests and cold climates. Hence statement 1 is correct.
The combination of acidic organic matter from needle and bark litter, heavy rainfall, and slow nutrient cycling creates the unique soil structure of podzols in this region. Soil has low fertility, low moisture along with phosphate deficiencies and aluminium toxicity, therefore not favourable for agriculture. Hence statement 2 is not correct.
pH value of podzoiic soil between 3.5 and 4.5. The pH-value of zonal Podzols increases with depth to a maximum of about 5.5 in the deep subsoil, whereas soil-pH in intrazonal Podzols tends to be lowest in the top of the B-horizon. Hence statement 3 is correct.
