CAG’s main function is to audit and report the expenditure from Consolidated Fund, Contingency Fund and Public Account of India and that of states. According to Article 150, the form in which the accounts of the Union and of the States are to be maintained is to be determined by the President on the advice of the CAG. CAG had earlier performed the function of compiling the accounts of the government. But the Comptroller and Auditor-General (Duties, Powers and Conditions of Service) Act, 1971, which, as amended in 1976, relieves CAG of its duty to compile the accounts of the Union. However, Comptroller and Auditor General continues to compile the accounts of all States except the State of Goa.
