Chilika is the largest coastal lagoon of Asia and India. The new caledonian barrier reef is the largest coastal lagoon of the world. Chilika is located on the mouth of River Daya. Spreads of three districts - Puri, Khurda and Ganjam. Home to around 1 million birds with 97 species of intercontinental migratory category. First waterbody to be put on Ramsar List or Wetlands of international importance in 1981. First site from India to be on Montreux record but later removed. Now only two are there - Keoladeo and Loktak.
At present India has 26 sites on Ramsar List or Ramsar sites. The latest entry onto the Ramsar List from India is Nalsarovar Bird Sanctuary in Junagarh and Amreli district of Gujarat.
