Colin Mackenzie , Scottish army officer in the British East India Company was appointed the first Surveyor General of India In 1815
It was he who produced the first authentic geographical map of south India. He recorded local histories, inscriptions, religious practices, festivals and social etiquette
By studying Vijayanagara, Mackenzie believed that the East India Company could gain “much useful information on many of these institutions, laws and customs whose influence still prevails among the various Tribes of Natives forming the general mass of the population to this day”.
In 1767, the British established the Survey of India. Major James Rennell was appointed as the first Surveyor General of India.
