Which of the following statements about Champaran Satyagraha of 1917 is incorrect?
The Champaran Satyagraha was organized by Gandhiji for the aid of Indigo peasants of Bihar.
Gandhiji visited Champaran on the invitation of Raj Kumar Shukla.
The British made a committee of enquiry to enquire about the plight of indigo peasants but Gandhiji was not made a part of the committee.
The Satyagraha eventually led to enactment of Champaran Agrarian Act, 1918.
The Champaran Satyagraha was first Satyagraha of Gandhiji 'in India'. The Satyagraha is also crucial as it yoked the Nationalist movement with the peasant struggle.
The peasants (bhumihars) of the Champaran and other areas of North Bihar were growing the Indigo under the tinakathia system. Under the tinakathia system the peasants were bound to plant 3 out of 20 parts of his land with indigo for his landlord. The planters had agreed to the peasants to relive them from the lease contracts but demanded heavy compensations which they were not able to pay. One local peasant leader Rajkumar Shukla had invited Mahatma Gandhi to visit Champaran. Gandhi ji arrived in Champaran but was later ordered by the District magistrate of Champaran W B Heycock to leave the district. Gandhi ji refused and persisted. He decided to commit Satyagraha. He was joined by many young nationalists from all over India, including Brajkishore Prasad, Rajendra Prasad, Anugrah Narayan Sinha, Acharya Kriplani, Ram Navami Prasad and later Jawaharlal Nehru. The Satyagraha forced British to appoint an enquiry committee and Gandhiji was part of the enquiry committee.
Also, he also scrutinized the draft bill of the 1918 Champaran Agrarian Act.
