Small pox was universally eradicated in 1979 and declared so in 1980; India’s UIP was launched in 1985. Under the UIP, India has been declared polio-free (wild poliovirus, not vaccine-derived poliovirus). The recently-launched MR (Measles, Rubella) vaccination campaign targets around 41 crore children across the country. All children aged between 9 months and less than 15 years will be given a single shot of Measles-Rubella (MR) vaccination irrespective of their previous measles/rubella vaccination status or measles/rubella disease status. MR vaccine will be provided free-of-cost across the states from session sites at schools as well as health facilities and outreach session sites. Measles vaccine is currently provided under Universal Immunization Programme (UIP). However, rubella vaccine will be a new addition. Measles and Rubella are highly contagious viral diseases that are spread by contact with an infected person through coughing and sneezing. Infection with Measles is followed by high fever, rash that spreads over the body, cough, running nose and red watery eyes. • Measles weakens the immune system of the body. Hence infection with Measles often leads to serious complications that include blindness, encephalitis, severe diarrhoea and severe respiratory infections such as pneumonia. Rubella is a mild viral infection that occurs most often in children and young adults. • Infection with Rubella is followed by rash and low fever. It may be associated with swelling of lymph node and joint pain. • Rubella infection during pregnancy can cause abortion, stillbirth and may lead to multiple birth defects in the new born; like blindness, deafness, heart defects; known as Congenital Rubella Syndrome (CRS). Eradication is the reduction of an infectious disease's prevalence in the global host population to zero. It is sometimes confused with elimination, which describes either the reduction of an infectious disease's prevalence in a regional population to zero, or the reduction of the global prevalence to a negligible amount.
The UIP provide free of cost vaccines to all children across the country to protect them against 11 life threatening diseases. These 11 diseases are Tuberculosis, Pertussis, Diphtheria, Tetanus, Hepatitis B, Polio, Pneumonia and Meningitis due to Haemophilus Influenzae type b (Hib), Measles, Rotavirus diarrhoea and Japanese Encephalitis (JE). (Rubella, JE and Rotavirus vaccine are given in select states and districts). It is the largest birth cohort in the world vaccinating around 26 million children annually.
