On 22 March every year, people and organizations mark World Water Day by taking action to tackle the water crisis. World Water Day 2021 focus on the theme, 'Valuing Water'. This focus will extend beyond issues of pricing to include the environmental, social, and cultural value people place on water.

The day encourages people not to waste one of the most important elements that sustain life on the planet. An international day to celebrate freshwater was recommended at the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro. The United Nations General Assembly responded by designating 22 March 1993 as the first World Water Day.
