As an alternative to the partition of India, Gandhiji suggested to Mountbatten that he:
Postpone granting of independence
Invite Jinnah to form the government
Invite Nehru and Jinnah to form the government together
Invite the army to take over for some time
In a last-ditch effort to prevent the partition of India, Mahatma Gandhi suggested to Lord Mountbatten that Muhammad Ali Jinnah be invited to form the government, essentially offering him the position of Prime Minister. Gandhi believed that this gesture might satisfy the Muslim League's demands for power and thereby avoid the need for partition. However, this suggestion was not accepted, and the leadership did not move forward with this idea, leading eventually to the partition of India into two separate nations, India and Pakistan, in 1947.
