The doctrine of subsidiary alliance was introduced by Lord Wellesley, British Governor-General in India from 1798 to 1805. The Nawab of Awadh was forced to vacate his throne and Dalhousie annexed Oudh on February 1856. 0th July 1857 was the day on which the Sepoy Mutiny started in Meerut. During the First War of Independence in 1857, he was forced to accept nominal leadership of the revolt. Shah Mal was killed in battle in July 1857. Rani Jhansi killed in Battle in June, 1858.
