1. The autonomous kingdom of Awadh was established by Safdar Jung, the governor of Awadh and also the Wazir of the Mughal Empire.
2. The prolonged peace and prosperity under the Nawabs of Awadh led to development and growth of art, craft and a distinct culture around the Awadh court.
Select the correct answer using codes given below
1 only
2 only
All of the above
None of the above
First statement is incorrect. The founder of the autonomous kingdom of Awadh was Saadat Khan Burhan-ul-Mulk who was appointed Governor of Awadh in 1722. During the later years of Muhammad Shah, he gained complete control of administration in the Mughal Empire. When Ahmad Shah Bahadur ascended the throne at Delhi in 1748, Safdar Jung became his Wazir ul-Mumalik-i-Hindustan or Chief Minister of Hindustan. Second statement is correct. The prolonged period of peace and of economic prosperity of the nobles under the government of the Nawabs resulted in time in the growth of a distinct Lucknow culture around the Awadh court. Lucknow, for long an important city of Awadh, and the seat of the Awadh Nawabs after 1775, soon rivalled Delhi in its patronage of the arts and literature. It also developed as an important centre of handicrafts. Crafts and culture also percolated to towns under the patronage of local chieftains and zamindars.
