Consider the following statements about Bengal during the 18th century and identify the incorrect one.
Murshid Quli Khan despite making Bengal virtually independent from central Mughal control kept on sending large tributes to the emperor.
Murshid Quli Khan transferred large parts of 'Jagir Lands' to 'Khalisah lands' and introduced revenue farming.
Being cautious of the military might of foreigners, the Nawabs of Bengal encouraged only local merchants/traders and not foreign traders.
The Nawabs of Bengal failed to build a strong modern army.
First statement is correct. Murshid Quli Khan earned the pleasure of the emperor by timely remittance of the tribute to Delhi and occasional presents of elephants, horses and fine cloth from Bengal. The emperor conferred on him the title of Mutaman-ul-Mulk Shuja-ud-din Asad Jang. Second statement is correct. Murshid Quli Khan effected economies in the administration and reorganized the finances of Bengal by transferring large parts of jagir lands into khalisah lands by carrying out a fresh revenue settlement, and by introducing the system of revenue-farming. He recruited revenue farmers and officials from local zamindars and merchant-bankers. Third statement is incorrect. Nawabs of Bengal encouraged local merchants/ traders and foreign traders. Between the middle of the 16th century and the middle of the 18th century India’s overseas trade steadily expanded. The trade in food stuffs and a wide range of textile products were the most important components of inter-regional trade during the period Bengal exported sugar and rice as well as delicate muslin and silk. By Farrukhsiyar’s farman of 1717, the English were permitted to carry on their export and import trade duty-free in Bengal. Fourth statement is correct. The Nawabs of Bengal neglected to build a strong army and paid a heavy price for it.
