Disinvestment is aimed at reducing the financial burden on the government due to inefficient PSUs and to improve public finances. It introduces competition and market discipline and helps to depoliticise non-essential services. In the budget speech 2018-19, Finance Minister announced that 2017-18 disinvestment target of Rs.72,500 crore has been exceeded and expected receipts of Rs.1,00,000 crore. Disinvestment has been set at Rs.80,000 crore for 2018-19.
