Consider the following statements with respect to the reign of Aurangzeb
1. Aurangzeb started the practice of jharoka darshan or showing himself to the public from the balcony to keep Mughal officials at their toes all the time.
2. Aurangzeb completely exempted Muslim traders from the payment of cess.
3. Aurangzeb levied Jazia/Jizya tax and discriminated towards people professing other religions.
Which of the above given statements are incorrect?
1 and 2 Only
1 and 3 Only
2 and 3 Only
1, 2 and 3
• First statement is incorrect. Jharokha Darshan was a daily practice of addressing the public audience (darshan) at the balcony (Jharokha) at the forts and palaces of medieval kings in India. It was an essential and direct way of communicating face-to-face with the public, and was a practice which was adopted by the Mughal emperors. It was adopted by the 16th-century Mughal Emperor Akbar. Aurangzeb withdrawn the practice of Jharokha darshan to the public from the balcony • Second statement is incorrect. To promote trade among the Muslims who depended (almost) exclusively on state support, Aurangzeb exempted Muslim traders from the payment of cess. However, Aurangzeb found that the Muslim traders were taking undue advantages of this and cheating the state; therefore, he reinstated it, but kept it at half. • Third statement is correct. Aurangzeb imposed a hated Jizya tax on Hindus- to institutionalise discrimination against non-Muslims. Jizya or jizyah is a per capita yearly tax historically levied by Islamic states on certain non-Muslim subjects—dhimmis—permanently residing in Muslim lands under Islamic law.
