Consider the following statements about the Black Soil found in India and identify the incorrect one.
Black Soil found in the western parts of Indian Peninsula has volcanic origin from Deccan Traps.
Black Soil has more of ‘Kankars’ and very less clay content and moisture retention capacity is also poor.
Black soils are in-situ or zonal soils.
These soils are rich in Potash, Magnesium etc. and poor in organic matter.
First statement is correct. Black soil is formed due to the solidification of lava spread over large areas during volcanic activity in the Deccan Plateau. It is spread over Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, parts of Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu. Second statement is incorrect. Black soils with equal proportion of clay, gravel and coarse sand has high moisture retention capacity. It swells greatly on accumulating moisture. Strenuous effort is required to work on such soil in rainy season as it gets very sticky. In summer, the moisture evaporates, the soil shrinks and is seamed with broad and deep cracks. The lower layers can still retain moisture. The cracks permits oxygenation of the soil to sufficient depths and the soil has extraordinary fertility. Third statement is also correct. The soils of Peninsular India are formed by the decomposition of rocks in situ, i.e. directly from the underlying rocks. And black soil is mainly found in peninsular India. Fourth statement is correct. Black soil is rich in iron, lime, calcium, potassium, aluminium and magnesium but deficient in Nitrogen, Phosphorous and organic matter.
