Malaria is caused by a single-celled parasite of the genus plasmodium. Only female Anopheles mosquitoes can transmit malaria. Female Anopheles mosquitoes pick up the parasite from infected people when they bite to obtain blood needed to nurture their eggs.
Five species of Plasmodium (single-celled parasites) can infect humans and cause illness:
Plasmodium falciparum (or P. falciparum)
Plasmodium malariae (or P. malariae)
Plasmodium vivax (or P. vivax)
