Which of the following is/are true in context of Maratha rulers during the eighteenth century India?
1. Peshwa Balaji Vishwanath helped Saiyyid brothers in overthrowing Muhammad Shah Rangila.
2. Peshwa Balaji Vishwanath allowed Maratha sardars to collect Chauth and Sardesmukhi and keep the greater part of it to themselves.
Select the correct answer using codes given below
1 only
2 only
All of the above
None of the above
First statement is incorrect. Relations between Farrukh-siyar and the Sayyid brothers were, however, never cordial, and each continued to plot against the other. It was this plotting and counter-plotting that led Sayyid Hussain Ali to open negotiations with Peshwa Balaji Vishwanath Bhat. Second statement is correct. Balaji Vishwanath established a complicated system in which Maratha Sardars were assigned separate areas to collect Chauth and Sardeshmukhi and then this was distributed between the King and Sardars (allowed to keep greater share for their expenses).
