Which of the following statements is/are correct?
1. The annual range of temperature is more extreme in the Northern Hemisphere compared to Southern Hemisphere.
2. Tropical cyclones are best formed at the equator as equator receives maximum insolation
Select the correct answer from the codes given below
1 only
2 only
Both 1 and 2
Neither 1 nor 2
Second statement is incorrect. Tropical cyclones are like giant engines that use warm, moist air as fuel. That is why they form only over warm ocean waters near the equator. The warm, moist air over the ocean rises upward from near the surface. Coriolis force or earth's rotation, easterly and westerly winds influence the path of a tropical cyclone. Coriolis force at equator is zero hence; tropical cyclones are not formed at equator as Coriolis force influences the path of tropical cyclone.
