In case of which one of the following biogeochemical cycles, the weathering of rocks is the main source of release of nutrient to enter the cycle?
Carbon cycle
Nitrogen cycle
Phosphorus cycle
Sulphur cycle
In the Phosphorus cycle, the weathering of rocks is the primary source of release of phosphorus into the cycle. Unlike many other biogeochemical cycles, the phosphorus cycle does not include a gas phase. Phosphorus is mainly found in rocks and is released into soil and water due to the weathering of rocks. From the soil, plants absorb it, and then it moves up the food chain. When plants and animals die and decompose, phosphorus returns to the soil or sediments. Over long geological timescales, these sediments can be uplifted and eventually lead to the formation of new rocks, and the cycle continues.
