Which of the given statement about the Cooperative societies in India is incorrect?
Cooperative societies have been given a constitutional status in India.
The state legislature has the authority to fix the number and term of members of boards and various office bearers.
In order to ensure autonomous functioning, the elected board cannot be suspended or superseded during its term of five years.
The provisions pertaining to cooperatives are applicable to the Union Territories also but the President has power to change or modify them.
First statement is correct. Under 74th Constitutional Amendment act, cooperative societies have been given a constitutional status in India. Second statement is correct. Article 243ZJ(2) mandates to the States that “The term of office of elected members of the board and its office bearers shall be five years from the date of election and the term of office bearers shall be coterminous with the term of the board” Third statement is also correct i.e. In order to ensure autonomous functioning, the elected board cannot be suspended or superseded during its term of five years. Fourth statement is incorrect. Due to strategic, political and administrative considerations, the union territories have been placed under central administration. • Union territories in India qualify as federal territories, by definition. But, do not take part in federal structure of the country.
