Identify the incorrect statement from the following
‘Territory of India’ is a wider expression than ‘Union of India’.
During reorganization of states, the President is constitutionally bound to refer such a bill to the state legislature to elicit its views.
Goa, Daman and Diu were acquired from the Portuguese by means of Police action.
So far, though several states have been reorganized in terms of area, there has not been a single incident of change of name of any state.
- ‘Territory of India’ is a wider expression than the ‘Union of India’ because the latter includes only states while the former includes not only the states but also union territories and territories that may be acquired by the Government of India at any future time. During reorganisation of states the President is constitutionally bound to refer the bill to the concerned state legislature for its views. However, the President is not bound to act as per the views of the states. So far several states have been reorganised as well as renamed. For ex- Madras state was renamed as Tamil Nadu, Mysore as Karnataka, United Provinces as Uttar Pradesh. Goa, Daman and Diu were acquired from the Portuguese by means of Police action in 1961.
