Which of the following statement about the Constituent Assembly of India is correct?
Ever since its formation in 1946, the Constituent Assembly was a sovereign body free to frame any constitution it pleased.
The seats in the Constituent Assembly were distributed among the three main communities, Muslims, Sikhs and General in proportion to their respective population
The members of these communities were elected by an open electorate consisting of all the members of the Provincial Legislative Councils.
The representatives of the Princely States were nominated by the Viceroy Lord Wavell.
First statement is incorrect as the Constituent Assembly was not a sovereign body and functioned under the British Control (infact the British demanded that India should frame a federal constitution). It was only after the Independence Act of 1947 that it became a sovereign body free to frame any type of constitution. Second statement is correct as seats in the legislative assembly were allotted between General Muslims and Sikhs in proportion to their population. Third is incorrect as the members of these communities were elected only by the members of provincial councils belonging to these communities. Fourth statement is incorrect as representatives of the princely States were nominated by Princes themselves.
