1. Raja Ram Mohan Roy wanted to reform Hinduism in the light of rationalism.
2. It was only under the leadership of Debendranath Tagore that the Brahmo Samaj was able to reach out to the masses.
3. Raja Ram Mohan Roy in his endeavour was trying to challenge the claim of supremacy of Christianity by the Missionaries.
Select the correct answer using codes given below
1 and 2 only
1 and 3 only
1, 2 and 3
None of the above
Ram Mohan Roy wanted to reform the Hinduism in the light of rationality to get rid of the obscurantism and orthodoxy in the Hinduism. He also wanted to disprove the claim of Christian missionaries and jesuits that Christianity was superior to all other religions in order to restore the lost faith and pride of the people. hence statement 1 and 3 are correct.
Second statement is incorrect. It was under the leadership of Keshavchandra Sen, that the Brahmo Samaj was able to reach out to the masses. Keshub was the first non-Brahmin to be elevated as head of Brahmo Samaj. He at once imparted a new vigour to Samaj work and generated so much apostolic zeal that its message rapidly spread to the remotest corners of Bengal. In 1864 he undertook an extensive tour of the presidencies of Madras and Bombay and prepared the ground for the spread of the message of the Brahmo Samaj in Southern and Western Brahmo Samaj of India. The Brahmo movement certainly gained momentum at this stage through the young Keshub's endeavours and even Rev. Alexander Duff, one of its arch rivals had to admit that "the Brahmo Samaj is a power, and a power of no mean order".
