In India annual fertilizer consumption is more in years of good monsoon as more crops are planted. But despite an above average monsoon for 2016-17 the ‘fertilizer consumption’ was below the average for past few years. What could be the possible reason/s behind this?
1. Weak monsoon for past 2-3 years has left farmers with little money for inputs like fertilizers.
2. Increase of acreage under pulses.
3. Environmental consciousness on part of Indian farmers.

1 and 2 only
All of the above
Indian agriculture is primarily rain-fed and a weak monsoon for past 3 years had affected the farm incomes of most of the farmers. As a result they have little money to spend on fertilizers this year and hence fertilizer consumption had been low despite good monsoon. Also, due to higher MSP and more promising returns on pulses (as they are less affected by vagrant nature of monsoon, farmers this year have grown more of pulses and pulses require less fertilizers. It is true that chemical fertilizers have adverse environmental impacts. But despite this, the major pressing need of Indian economy is to boost farm productivity and farm incomes and hence chemical fertilizer consumption is promoted.
