Despite lying on the equator, the eastern half is not covered with evergreen rainforests typical to equatorial regions. This is so because the eastern half comprises of highlands i.e. plateaus and mountains. As a result these areas are cooler and do not receive the high convectional rainfall needed for evergreen rainforests.
