Assertion (A) - Compared to 1960s, the area under forests has increased in India.
Reason (R) - This increase is due to area demarcated as forest under government land revenue records and not due to actual increase in forest cover.
Both A and R are correct and R is the correct explanation for A
Both A and R are correct but R is not the correct explanation for A
A is correct but R is incorrect
A is incorrect but R is correct
In India the land records are kept by the land revenue department while the maps are made by Survey of India. The records of land revenue dept. keep on changing frequently based on updates of land use pattern or change in definitions of the dept. But maps made by Survey of India are based on actual geographical survey and depict geographical reality and depictions in it might not match the records of land revenue department. For eg- Forest as per Survey of India is any area more than one hectare having a canopy density of at least 10%. But forest area in land records also includes those areas which don’t have actual forest cover but have been demarcated by government for forest development. Hence as per land revenue records the forest cover might be much more than the actual geographical forest cover. In India the increase in forest cover can be explained on basis of increase in area demarcated as forest rather than actual increase in forest cover.
