Net sown area impacts overall production and has no bearing on productivity of agriculture. Moreover India has much larger net sown area than China despite having only one-third of landmass as compared to China. Net sown area in India is second only to USA in whole world. Both India and China suffer from small sized landholdings that constraint mechanization of agriculture to boost productivity. But fertilizer usage is much higher in China than India. In addition, China invests significantly more in agricultural research and development compared to India to produce high yield and quicker-growing crop varieties. This, along with better irrigation and more intensive cultivation of the land by double or even triple cropping are the primary reasons for China’s superior yields.
