Identify the incorrect statement from the following
In India the coal deposits are of two main geological ages, the Gondwana deposits and the Tertiary deposits.
The Gondwana deposits are older than the Tertiary deposits.
Gondwana deposits are found in the north eastern states of Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh while the Tertiary deposits are found in the valleys of Godavari, Mahanadi, Son Rivers.
The coal mines in Tamil Nadu yield poor quality lignite.
The quality of coal depends upon age, pressure and temperature and age is the most critical factor. The Gondwana period refers to the period 200 million years (Jurassic period) from now when due to tectonic movements there was subduction of certain organic matter leading to formation of coal. But this coal is of poor quality as it has not gotten the maturity of carboniferous coal (350 million years old). Gondwana coal is found in the river valleys of central and eastern India namely Damodar, Mahanadi , Son, Godavari etc. Compared to this, the tertiary coal belongs to the tertiary period i.e. 50 million years old formed during the contact between the Eurasian and Indian plate. This coal is found in the states of northeast India. The Neyveli mines of Tamil Nadu mainly yield poor quality lignite coal.
