Quality of Coal – Anthracite>Bituminous>Lignite>Peat  (Good quality coal has higher carbon content and lower moisture content)
Anthracite is regarded ideal for metallurgical purposes due to its highest carbon content and low moisture and hence high heating capacity. (heating capacity is high due to more carbon and hence more calorific value)
India has only poor quality Bituminous and Lignite coal and is highly deficient in good quality Anthracite. That’s why we import good quality coal from countries like Indonesia, Australia etc.
The Coal India Ltd earlier enjoyed a monopoly in Coal mining. But the government recently ended the monopoly by opening coal mining to private sector as well.
