Bedded or layered formation is typical to sedimentary rocks and minerals like Coal are found in this manner.
Igneous or metamorphic rocks contain mineral deposits in cracks, crevices, faults or joints. The minerals in molten or aqueous form (due to heat inside earth) are forced upwards and get lodged into these cracks and fissures. The smaller occurrences are called veins while the bigger ones are called lodes.
Most of the major mineral deposits regions (Chhota Nagpur plateau,the Karnataka Goa region etc.) are found east to the line joining Mangalore and Kanpur.
Minerals that form placer deposits have high specific gravity, are chemically resistant to weathering, and are durable; such minerals include gold, platinum, cassiterite, magnetite, chromite, ilmenite, rutile, native copper, zircon, monazite, and various gemstones.
Placer deposits are found generally at the foothills where the other materials of the ore/rock have been either corroded by water or winnowed off by the action of gravity leaving the heavier and more resistant mineral behind.
