Consider the following statements about alluvial soils
1. Alluvial soils in India are restricted to the Indo-Gangetic plains in North India.
2. The alluvial soils can be classified as per their age into Khadar and Bangar soils with Khadar being the new and fertile one.
3. In case of the alluvial soils, as we move inland towards the river valleys, the soil particles become coarser and bigger.
Select the correct answer using the codes given below
1 and 2 only
2 and 3 only
1 and 3 only
All of the above
Statement 1 is incorrect. Though majorly, the alluvial soils are deposited by three important Himalayan river systems- Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra. But the alluvial soils also extend in Rajasthan and Gujarat through a narrow corridor. These soils are also found along the eastern coastal plains particularly in the deltas of the east flowing Indian rivers. Khadar is the new alluvium and Bangar is the old one. Khadar is finer and more fertile, while Bangar is coarser and has higher concentration of Kanker (calcareous nodules or calcium carbonate nodules (lime)). As a river advances in its course, the coarser and bigger particles are deposited first while the finer particles are carried further downstream and deposited at a later stage than the coarse particles. It is due to this reason that the alluvium in the upper stages of a river has more of coarse sand particles while the lower deltaic stages are made up of finer silt or clay particles.
