Consider the following statements and identify the correct one
Both Ria coasts and Fiord/Fjord coasts are coastlines of emergence.
Both Ria and Fiord coasts are formed due to Glacial action.
Depth of Ria coasts increases or remains constant seawards while that of Fiords decreases seawards.
All of the above are correct
Coastlines of submergence are those that have been formed due to the sinking of land or the rise in sea levels. Examples are- Ria coasts, fiords, Dalmatian coasts etc. Coastlines of emergence are those that are formed due to uplift of land or fall in the sea level. The coastlines formed by deposition of sediments from land or upthrusted landmasses are such coasts. Ria coasts are formed in regions where mountains run at right angles to the sea and hence the valleys got inundated when the sea level rose post ice age era. These are not glaciated features and their depth generally remains constant or increases towards sea. Examples are coastlines of North west France, Spain etc. Fjords on the other hand are submerged U-shaped glacial troughs and their depth decreases towards the sea as the U-shaped valleys get shallower. Often the deposition of sediments at the mouth of the U shaped valley hinders navigation. Apart from these there are Dalmatian coasts in which mountains run parallel to the coast. For example the port of San Francisco is located along a Dalmatian coast.
