Consider the following statements
1. The oceans in the northern hemisphere record higher temperature than those in southern hemisphere.
2. The highest oceanic temperatures are recorded not at the equator but slightly North of it.
Select the correct answer using the codes given below
1 only
2 only
Both are correct
Neither is correct
The highest temperatures are not recorded at equator as equator receives less insolation due to cloudiness. Also there is constant addition of cooler waters due to rains. So temperatures north of the equator show higher temperatures than those in south due to more contact with landmass in north.
Unequal distribution of land and water in north and south hemisphere impacts the temperature. The ocean in the northern hemisphere receive more heat due to their contact with larger extent of land than in southern hemisphere. Moreover, due to the warm ocean currents (gulf stream, Kuroshio current) the temperature of northern ocean rises as compared to its counterpart.
