Continental shelves are extension of continental landmass in to oceans and not the other way round. Continental shelves are a rich source of several minerals. Most of the hydrocarbon extraction, extraction of metallic and non-metallic minerals takes place from continental shelves only. The continental shelves are covered with variable thicknesses of sediments brought down by rivers, glaciers, wind, from the land and distributed by waves and currents. Massive sedimentary deposits received over a long time by the continental shelves, become the source of fossil fuels. The Siberian continental shelf extends upto 1200-1500 kilometers into the Arctic Ocean making it the broadest continental shelf in the world. The smallest continental shelf is along the Andes in South America.
