With reference to micro-irrigation, which of the following statements is/are correct?
1. Fertilizer/nutrient loss can be reduced.
2. It is the only means of irrigation in dry land farming.
3. In some areas of farming, receding of ground water table can be checked.
Select the correct answer using the codes given below
1 only
1 and 2 only
1 and 3 only
All of the above
Micro irrigation mainly uses Drip or Sprinkler irrigation systems. In these systems consumption as well as efficacy of fertilizers can be improved by the process of Fertigation i.e. dissolving fertilizers in the water channel itself. This increases the efficiency of fertilizer application and prevents nutrient loss. Micro irrigation due to its less consumption of water is ideally suited for dryland farming but that does not mean that it’s the only means of irrigation in dryland farming. Other sources like tubewells, canals etc can also be used. In several areas of India (like Marathawada ) ground water tables are receding due to over utilization for irrigation. Since micro irrigation consumes less water than traditional flooding technique of irrigation it can certainly control receding ground water tables.
