Consider the following statements about cotton cultivation in India
1. India grows both short staple (Indian) as well as long staple (American) varieties of cotton.
2. Cotton is confined to black soil regions of India.
3. Bollworm pest was responsible for damage to cotton crops in Punjab in 2015-16.
Select the correct answer using the codes given below
1 and 2 only
2 and 3 only
1 only
All of the above
The staple length of cotton is the length of the cotton fibre. Long staple cotton has longer fibre length and is hence more fine and better suited for modern spindles and weaving machinery. Compared to it short staple cotton is rough but due to its more moisture absorption capacity it is ideally suited to hot and humid Indian season. Cotton grows best in black soil regions but that does not mean that it is confined to those regions only. It is grown extensively in Haryana , Punjab and Rajasthan as well. Now India mostly grows Bt cotton variety which is genetically modified to resist Bollworm only. The pest that has been responsible for crop damages in Punjab for last few years is White Fly.
